The Dental Organization for Sleep Apnea (DOSA) was developed to make a significant impact on the awareness and screening of sleep apnea in the dental practice and the recommendation of proper treatment after diagnosis by a physician to include oral appliance therapy. DOSA intends to penetrate the dental marketplace through education and awareness. DOSA also intends to push for an increase in the number of screenings done in dental offices around the world for this potentially life threatening condition.

The American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) is a professional membership organization dedicated to the advancement of sleep medicine and related research. The Academy’s mission is to assure quality care for patients with sleep disorders, promote the advancement of sleep medicine and provide public and professional education. The AASM achieves this mission by positioning sleep medicine as a medical sub-specialty, preserving and enhancing the specialty’s ability to provide quality care for patients with sleep disorders, fostering the development of pre-clinical and clinical scientific knowledge and increasing public awareness.

Established in 1987, the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (formerly the American Sleep Disorders Association) is headquartered in Westchester, Ill. Today, the AASM is the largest professional medical association representing practitioners of sleep medicine and wakefulness. Although the field is multidisciplinary in origin and nature, the Academy serves as a common platform for professionals from a wide spectrum of backgrounds and specialties, including neurology, pulmonology, psychology, psychiatry, internal medicine, pediatrics, dentistry, and otolaryngology.

The AASM provides programs, information and services to more than 4,900 individual members and more than 500 center members, and advocates sleep medicine supportive policies in the medical community and the public sector. These programs and services include the sponsorship of educational forums, the establishment of practice parameters, the accreditation of sleep disorder centers and laboratories, and the development of products for professional and patient education.

THE ACADEMY OF DENTAL SLEEP MEDICINE (ADSM)

The Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine (ADSM) is a professional membership organization promoting the use and research of oral appliances and oral surgery for the treatment of sleep disordered breathing and provides training and resources for those who work directly with patients. ADSM members collaborate with colleagues to learn about oral appliances and the role they play in the diagnosis and treatment of sleep-related breathing disorders. The organization builds bridges and forms relationships with the medical community, especially with sleep centers and other professional groups that play an integral part of the sleep disorders treatment and research team. The ADSM helps educate practitioner dentists through clinical meetings that keep leading-edge ideas accessible and establishes and maintains appropriate treatment protocol. The ADSM also reaches out to the community at large, working toward the creation of a positive public awareness of sleep disorders and the role of the dentist in recogniti on and treatment of sleep breathing disorders.

Sleepcenters.org is a network of accredited sleep disorders centers and/or sleep-related breathing laboratories, maintained by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM). Sleep centers can help detect and treat any sleep disorder that may trouble a patient. The AASM sets strict rules for centers and labs to follow. The mission of the AASM is to assure the highest quality of care for patients. The AASM accredits two types of sleep disorders medical facilities. Both types of operations must meet the same high standards.
